What if President Bush has outwitted, outplayed, and outlasted all of us. After John Roberts was approved for SCOTUS, everyone wanted Bush to nominate a relatively moderate woman in the mold of O’Conner. However, Bush wanted to name a conservative man like Alito who he knew would do his judicial bidding. Realizing his lose-lose situation, he called in personal friend Harriet Miers and asked her to “take one for the team” and present herself as the incompetent O’Conner-esque nominee. Conservative columnists were told to bash Miers and embarrasing evidence such as Miers’ “you’re the best governor ever” letter were leaked to eliminate her from contention. Then, Bush could pull back her nomination and put up the archetypal conservative he always wanted. Just a conspiracy theory (or not?).
